"During the winter of 1990 I began intensive training for an attempt to climb 29,028’ Mt. Everest, alone and without supplemental oxygen, while trying to beat the existing world-record rapid ascent time of 22 ½ hours. During this period of training and preparation I tested many different brands of clothing to find the best available garments that I would use during this specialized ascent. Travelling light was of utmost importance, as was the need to find clothing that was warm, functional, comfortable and would keep me dry. Since I would be moving fast, the ability for my clothing to keep moisture away from my skin in the cold environment was crucial to my success, let alone to keep me alive.

During that time, and in my position of Deputy Director of Triathlon Federation/USA, and the General Manager of the U.S. Triathlon Team, I visited a trade show where I was introduced to MAXIT thermal clothing which seemed to fit the properties that I had been looking for in undergarment wear. I later learned that the clothing was also being used successfully by the U.S. Cycling Team.

After extensive testing throughout the Colorado winter on nearby Pikes Peak (14,110’), I became increasingly impressed with the MAXIT clothing and remember ascending the peak one day in 50-60 MPH winds in sub-zero temperatures with only a single layer of the clothing covering my body – AND I REMAINED WARM AND DRY FOR THE ENTIRE CLIMB!

While on Everest, as a member of the 1991 American Everest Expedition, (which placed four members on the summit), I attempted a rapid ascent during which I realized the wise choice I had made with the MAXIT clothing. I was climbing quickly through the infamous Khumbu icefall in the intense late afternoon sun. The sun was going down, the wind was picking up, and I was worried that I would get very cold because of me sweating from the effort.

I arrived at the top of the icefall and put on another layer of MAXIT underwear and decided I would continue until I became too cold, which was certain to happen, and then descend. I was now at 21,000’ the sun was gone and a strong cold wind slowed my progress. Incredibly, I did not get cold but found that after 30 minutes or so that my MAXIT top was bone dry. I continued my ascent to 23,000’ before being turned back due to a headlamp failure.

In twenty years of mountaineering and hiking around the world I have never experienced clothing that performed this well. Thank you for developing a product that I can really trust."
